STONY BROOK, NY – A three-run seventh inning proved to be the difference for Stony Brook this afternoon in non-conference action as the hosts upended the Iona College baseball team 5-2 at Joe Nathan Field.
The Seawolves (18-12) scored a run in each of the first and third innings as Brandon Alamo notched a RBI single in the bottom of the opening inning followed by John Tuccillo tallying a RBI hit in the third inning after scoring the first run.
The Gaels (8-19) were able to cut the deficit in half in the fifth as
Fran Kinsey notched a RBI double to left score that scored
Dion Austrie, who led off with a walk.
Stony Brook was able to add on needed insurance runs in the seventh with three runs on no hits in the frame. Four straight walks to open the inning scored the first run before Bobby Honeyman and Chris Hamilton drove in a run each with sacrifice flies.
The three runs turned into needed runs as
Sean Breen doubled in the top of the eighth to score
Fran Kinsey. However, the Gaels were unable to take advantage of runners on the corners with one out in the same inning before falling 5-2.
Kinsey led the group with two hits in addition to a run scored and a RBI.
James Gosweiler went four innings in the start, striking out three batters.
Lou Matarazzo struck out one in the final 1.1 innings on the mound.
Iona quickly returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a non-conference tilt at St. John's. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
