NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Yale scored four runs combined in the first two innings as well as the final two frames in addition to a tally in the fifth while also using nine different pitchers on the way to a 9-0 non-conference win against the Iona College baseball team this afternoon at City Park.
Nine different individuals for the Bulldogs (20-15) pitched one inning of work this afternoon to combine for the shutout with just two hits allowed while six of the nine struck out one batter in the process.
Offensively, a lead off bunt single from Tim DeGraw in the first inning led to the first run of the game as the outfielder scored on a ground out from Benny Wanger. In the second, Alex Boos was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to earn a RBI followed by a DeGraw walk to make the advantage 3-0. Simon Whiteman added the final tally of the inning with a RBI single to score Dai Dai Otaka with Boos being thrown out at the plate on the play as well.
After Whiteman scored on a Wanger sacrifice fly in the fifth, Yale scored two runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings. Griffin Dey drove in three of those runs that included a two-run single in the ninth.
In the effort for Iona (8-25),
Jason Antalek tossed 5.2 innings in relief with a pair of strikeouts and just two hits allowed.
Niko Switalla drew two walks from the designated hitter position.
Looking ahead, the Maroon & Gold welcome Marist this weekend for a three-game series at City Park starting on Saturday with a noon doubleheader followed by a 1 pm contest on Sunday.
