HAMDEN, CT – A 9-4 victory for the Iona College baseball team helped clinch a weekend series victory at Quinnipiac this afternoon during MAAC action.
Both teams put a run on the board in the second before the Gaels scored seven straight runs in the top of the fourth and sixth on the way to the win.
Going into the fourth with a 1-1 tie,
Fran Kinsey scored the go-ahead run on an error following a single from
Seth Hoagland. Hoagland scored on an error during a
Sam Punzi single to put the Gaels ahead 3-1.
Looking to add to the margin,
Sam Punzi notched a two RBI single to plate Hoagland and
Lou Matarazzo. Punzi scored later along with
Brian Picone as
Tyler Bruno singled to left and advanced to third on an error in the outfield. Bruno scored in the next at-bat as
Sean Scales singled to left center.
After the Bobcats connected on a pair of solo homeruns in the bottom of the sixth, Punzi notched his third RBI of the game in the top of the ninth to increase the margin to 9-3. Quinnipiac's fourth solo homerun of the game in the bottom of the ninth concluded the scoring as
Schuyler Bates produced a ground out and pop out.
Iona returns to the diamond on Tuesday with a trip to Queens to face St. John's at 6 pm.
