Lacrosse Tops Siena 11-5 On Senior Day

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – In a game in which Iona honored it's eight seniors, the veterans came through, notching every goal for Iona in an 11-5 victory over the Siena Saints on Saturday at Mazzella Field. Prior to the game, Kaitlyn Becker, Pamela Giordano, Jenna Tolzmann, Emma Hager, Gabriella Di Domizio Caleigh Gunn were honored with pregame ceremonies. Katelyn Noschese will also be finishing her tenure with the Gaels in her fifth year.

Giordano led the Gaels offensively, scoring five goals to go along with three ground balls and four draw controls. Tolzmann scored three and Noschese, Becker, and Hager each tallied one. Di Domizio added to her Iona record, causing two more turnovers. Shannon McCaffrey made eight saves in net and collected three ground balls.

Becker was the first to find the back of the net, connecting on a free position shot for her 10th goal of the season. Siena scored the next two before Libby Miller found Giordano with 6:35 remaining in the half to knot the score at 2-2. Giordano followed up with another goal 14 seconds later to give the Gaels the lead. With 3:36 left to play, the Saints tied the game at three, but Noschese and Tolzmann put the Gaels up for good in the final minutes.

In the second half, Becker found Giordano to give the Maroon & Gold a 6-3 lead. Two minute later the Saints cut into the lead but Giordano put the Gaels back up three on a free position attempt.

Siena scored it's final tally with 21:50 to play as the Gaels clamped down defensively and found the back of the net four more times. With 10:19 remaining, Giordano scored her 35th goal of the season off a feed from Christine Gironda. Tolzmann tallied a pair and was capped off by Hager with 4:44 to play. In the final minutes and the game seemingly in hand, Iona tried to find Di Domizio for her first career goal but one goal was called back and her final shot with 12 seconds remaining sailed high.

As a team, the Gaels put up 25 shots on goal and controlled 12 out of 18 draws. Iona turned the ball over 16 times opposed to Siena's 24 with the Gaels causing 14.

Iona Lacrosse is back home for another MAAC matchup on Wednesday against Manhattan, beginning at 3:00 PM.
