NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College baseball team closed out the 2018 MAAC schedule with a split against Saint Peter's this afternoon at City Park after honoring 13 seniors prior to the start of the twinbill.
GAME ONE
The Peacocks notched the opening game victory by a final of 7-1 after scoring four runs throughout the third, fourth and fifth innings and capping off the win with three runs in the top of the seventh. Cole Robbins, Anthony Assant and Chris Marquart each notched two RBI in the opener.Â
Saint Peter's jumped ahead in the top of the third inning as Alex Slawinski scored during an infield error with two outs.
Seth Hoagland tied the game for the Maroon & Gold in the bottom half with a solo homerun to right field. However, the visitors answered as Robbins drew a bases loaded walk to put the Peacocks ahead for good.
Assante notched a two RBI double in the fifth to increase the margin before Marquart added his own two-run hit in the seventh. Robbins added his second RBI later in the inning with a single up the middle to put the final at 7-1.
GAME TWO
In the finale, the Maroon & Gold recorded 22 hits towards a 19-2 victory as
Fran Kinsey and
Sean Breen each drove in four runs while Kinsey and
Brian Picone scored four tallies a piece.
Kinsey was one of four Gaels to record three hits in the contest, being joined by Breen along with
Sam Punzi and
Lou Matarazzo.
All of the scoring came throughout the first six innings for Iona that opened the game with five runs in the first inning. Picone and Kinsey put together back-to-back doubles to open the inning and the scoring at 1-0. Breen, Punzi, Hoagland and
Dion Austrie all added RBI hits in the frame.Â
On the mound, eight pitchers logged the full nine innings for the Gaels including seven seniors.
Stephen Hansen earned his fourth win of the year behind 4.2 innings and four strikeouts.
