Iona Volleyball Falls In Four Sets Against Eastern Illinois

CHARLESTON, IL – The Iona College volleyball program dropped its final match in its season-opening Eastern Illinois Tournament to the host Panthers in four sets (25-14, 12-25, 16-25, 16-25) on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Claire Archibald had a team-best 12 kills and 13 digs for her third consecutive double-double. Senior Mia Bonsignore and junior Karla Johnson each recorded six kills and two blocks. Rookie Alessandra Brady had the most productive day of her young career with three kills and a career-best three blocks.

Senior Emma Rose led the Maroon & Gold with 29 assists and three service aces. She contributed 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. Redshirt junior Jessica Paolucci had 11 digs and two aces. Freshman Cassandra Patsos had six kills on 20 attempts and contributed 7.5 points off the bench.

The Gaels had a dominant .364 attack percentage in the first set when they committed just one attack error. However, the offensive efficiency dipped going forward. The Maroon & Gold had a negative attack percentage in second and four set. Iona made 12 attacking errors in the fourth and decisive set. Eastern Illinois had just 14 attacking errors in the match.

The Panthers had Laurel Bailey lead the way with 15 kills. Gina Furlin had four service aces and 13 assists. Anne Hughes dug out a match-best 16 Maroon & Gold attacks.

Archibald was named to the All-Tournament Team. She had three double-doubles and totaled 39 kills, 34 digs and one block. She averaged 3.9 kills, and 3.4 digs per set. Archibald recorded a .253 attack percentage.

Iona returns to action this upcoming weekend at the Dog Pound Challenge, hosted by the UConn, in Storrs, CT. The Gaels serve up against the Huskies on Friday night and the New Hampshire Wildcats on Saturday afternoon.
