Iona Men and Women Dominate at Stony Brook Dual Meet

STONY BROOK, NY - Fresh off of a five-day training trip in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Iona College men's and women's swimming and diving team took to the road today and didn't miss a stroke as they dominated a dual meet at Stony Brook University.

The Iona women grabbed a pair of wins against the host Stony Brook Seawolves by a score of 174-113 and 217-42 over Adelphi. The Iona men handled Adelphi 177-63.

The dual meet at Stony Brook saw 15 different Iona swimmers notch wins in 19 individual races on the day.

Double winners on the men's side include junior Matt Anderson in the 1,000-yard Free and 200-Individual Medley and sophomore Conor Mullin in the 100 and 200-Butterfly.

The women's side included double gold-medal efforts by sophomore Kate Flynn in the 50 and 100-Free; freshman Kaylin McMahon in the 200-Butterfly and Backstroke and sophomore Isabelle Pabon racing in the 1,000-Free and 200-Individual Medley.

Six swimmers on the men's side recorded wins in one event: freshman Daniel Hadary (200-Free); rookie Aidan Holbrook (100-Free); junior Jakub Korek (200-Breast); freshman Jackson Madonia (100-Breast); sophomore Spencer Moran (200-Back) and sophomore Delano Townsend (50-Free).

Other women's wins at the dual meet included junior Aly Chain (100-Fly); senior Maria DiBella (500-Free); sophomore Willow Lopez Silvers (200-Free); and freshman Rebecca Sembrano (100-Back).

"I'm very pleased with the way the team has performed both in training and competition. For our men to step up and win and women's to take second in the St. Petersburg Relay Classic in the middle of daily double sessions is encouraging," Cavataro said. "There is no doubt we are a tired group right now, but we will be ready for Fairfield on the road next Saturday. The work since September and through the fall and winter months will shine!"

The wins raise the women's season dual meet mark to 8-2 as they next take on the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions on the road next Saturday, Jan. 19 at 1:00 p.m. The Iona men move to 6-1 on the season and will also face Fairfield next.
