Iona Buried by Defending MAAC Champs

Junior transfer Morgan Rachu bounced back after an off-night vs. Fairfield, leading all Gael scorers with 12 points.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY –  The Iona College women's basketball team could not hang with the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Sunday afternoon, losing 76-39. Junior transfer Morgan Rachu bounced back after an off-night vs. Fairfield, leading all Gael scorers with 12 points.

GAME SUMMARY

The Bobcats made good use of some early Iona turnovers, converting them into six points early on. Iona trailed 11-4 at the first media timeout with all four of its points coming from freshman Juana Camilion. The visitors extended their lead to 14 points before Camilion dropped off a nice pass inside for her rookie classmate Gabrielle Joseph to stop the run. Iona ended the quarter on a high note when Barefield's heave at the buzzer from just inside half court banked in off the glass.

Quinnipiac's Brittany Martin opened up the second quarter burying two tries from beyond the arc, forcing head coach Billi Chambers to use a timeout early on in the first half. Over the course of the final three minutes of the half, the Bobcats went on a 10-0 run and held the Maroon & Gold scoreless for the final three and a half minutes.

The Bobcats' lead grew as big as 30 points halfway through the third quarter, and Iona was held without a point for the first four and a half minutes. The Gaels hung tough in the third quarter; however, they didn't gain much ground on Quinnipiac, trailing 56-29 after three.

The Bobcats kept their foot on the gas pedal in the fourth quarter. A 7-0 run culminating with two free throws from Edel Thornton put Quinnipiac up 35 with seven minutes to play. The visitors cruised to an eventual 76-39 victory at the Hynes Center.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Iona tied a season-high defensively as a team, amassing three blocks on the afternoon.
  • Rachu's 12 points led the team offensively; it is the 11thtime this season she has owned a team-best point total and the 13thtime the junior has scored in double-figures.
  • The Maroon & Gold turned the ball over 31 times against the stingy defense of Quinnipiac. The Bobcats converted those takeaways into 33 points.
  • Quinnipiac was paced offensively by Brittany Martin; she scored a game-high 16 points, shooting 4-6 from downtown and the free throw line.
  • Up until the fourth quarter, the Gaels had received scoring from just four players. Junior Jodi-Marie Ramil became the fifth Iona player to score a basket with just under five minutes remaining in the game.
  • The win is Quinnipiac's 39thconsecutive against a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent.

UP NEXT

Iona will get back on the road, heading up to Buffalo for matchups with Canisius (Jan. 31) and Niagara (Feb. 2).
