Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jack Clark

Iona Falls to Monmouth in MAAC Opener

The Iona College women's basketball team lost in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener to the Monmouth Hawks, 55-38. Redshirt sophomore Monica Barefield scored a team-high 13 points, shooting an efficient three-of-five from three-point range.

GAME SUMMARY

Junior Amelia Motz, in her first start of the season, got the Gaels on the board offensively with a baseline jumper just over a minute into the game. Three straight baskets by the Hawks, including a three-pointer, put them ahead 9-2. Iona answered by scoring the final nine points of the frame, with the final three coming from a Morgan Rachu buzzer-beater.

Iona's lead was short-lived, as the Hawks scored the first seven points of the period to force a timeout. Junior transfer Jodi Marie-Ramil answered the call, getting the Maroon & Gold a much-needed bucket out of the timeout. Following that, Iona was held scoreless for over five minutes and Monmouth erupted offensively for 15 straight points. Just like at the end of the first frame, Rachu knocked down a trey ball from the corner and sent Iona into the locker room on a high note, despite the double-digit deficit.

Both teams traded buckets out of the halftime break, helping Monmouth maintain a ten-point lead throughout the majority of the quarter. The Hawks ended the frame on a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 14.

Monmouth cruised through the early stages of the fourth quarter, holding Iona without a point for nearly seven minutes before Barefield connected on a trifecta on back-to-back possessions. The Joliet, Illinois native closed things out for the Maroon & Gold, scoring all 10 points in the quarter.
