NEW ROCHELLE, NY – On a rainy afternoon at Iona College, the Monmouth Hawks remained undefeated in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play as they took down Iona 5-0.
MATCH SUMMARY
The Monmouth Hawks, undefeated in conference play this season, dominated play from the get-go despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions. Iona played most of the match in its own defensive zone, but held strong on the back line for the majority of the first half.
The blemish for the Gaels in the first half was a Madie Gibson goal in the 17
th minute. The Preseason Player of the Year stole the ball from
Katie Benson in Iona's third of the field, moved on net and put a grounded shot past the diving
Emma Havrilla.
The Maroon & Gold didn't have many chances offensively in the opening 45 minutes; the team's lone shot came off the head of senior
Julia Peschetti on a free kick that was corralled by Amanda Knaub.
Monmouth's Jill Conklin nearly gave her side a two-goal lead at the end of the half, but her try bounded off of the crossbar and out of bounds. The Maroon & Gold entered the half well within striking distance of the league's top team.
Bounces began to go in favor of the visitors in the second half. A free kick for the Hawks in the opening minute of the period from just inside midfield skipped high over Havrilla's head and into the back of the net. Monmouth expanded on its lead minutes later when Dana Scheriff's shot from inside the box glanced off of the body of
Mackenzie Meixner and in for a goal.
With just under 15 minutes to play in regulation, Alexis Marino scored her first goal of the season to give the Hawks a 4-0 advantage. The Gaels best second-half chance came in the final 10 minutes of the match;
Lisette Palomo's header on a cross from Peschetti went over Knaub's outstretched hands but was wide right of the cage, however.
With the match already decided, the Hawks' A'Liah Moore scored to make it 5-0 and help Monmouth remain undefeated in MAAC play.
