Iona Tops Quinnipiac 1-0 on Homecoming Weekend

Senior Amber Crispin scored the lone goal of the match as the Gaels took down Quinnipiac on Mazzella Field.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – One goal was all that was needed for the Iona College women's soccer team to secure a win on homecoming weekend. Senior Amber Crispin scored the lone goal of the match as the Gaels took down Quinnipiac on Mazzella Field.

MATCH SUMMARY

The opening 10 minutes of the match saw continuous changes of possession and not much action offensively. Each side tried one shot apiece but neither could direct it on goal. Kiera Haggerty's 15th minute shot gave Iona a 2-1 advantage in that department, but like the first Gael shot, it was off target.

Selena Salas had the Bobcats' best chance in the 28th minute, but Iona's backline was able to stop her shot from making its way into net with Havrilla off of her line. That team save made its way out towards Gretchen Kron, who also tried a shot, but that attempt was blocked and never made it to the cage.

Exactly a minute later, Mackenzie Meixner had a free kick from just around midfield that forced Meaghan Phillips to make a save. After an unsuccessful corner, Iona recovered the ball and Samantha Hogan tried a shot that was saved by Quinnipiac defenders inside the box.

Both sides entered the half scoreless and without much to show for. The second period would prove to be much more interesting.

A four-minute span in the opening portion of the second half saw four shots between the two sides, three of which came from the Maroon & Gold. An Iona corner kick at the 60-minute mark resulted in a Ciara Guglielmo shot from a tough angle that forced Phillips to make another save.

Eight minutes later, Meixner sent a free kick in towards the box that Andrea Ferrer flicked towards the near post, which was sent into the upper corner of the net by the right foot of Crispin.

Iona did not settle after its first goal; the Gael offense kept up the pressure and continued to force Phillips to make saves. Guglielmo had two magnificent chances on net for Iona, but watched as both tries sailed wide of the post.

The Gaels would lock down defensively though, denying the Bobcats of any more opportunities and closing out the win on their home field.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Iona's win was its second in league play this season, surpassing last season's MAAC win total.
  • Crispin's goal was her MAAC-leading eighth of the season and her third game-winning goal of 2019.
  • Crispin's now leads the unit with 16 points this season, one more than Preziosi's 15.
  • Meixner and Ferrer combined for the assist on Iona's lone goal. Meixner owns the team-lead in helpers with four.
  • Havrilla faced nine shots from the Bobcats but did not make a save in the shutout win. Iona's lone save was credited to the team.
  • The win is the third of the season for Havrilla in net. The sophomore keeper has earned a shutout in her last two victories.
  • The Gaels outshot the Bobcats 14-9. Phillips made four saves for Quinnipiac.
