Canisius Defeats Iona Volleyball In Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY – The Iona College volleyball program fell in straight sets (18-25, 24-26, 19-25) to Canisius College on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins sweep the season series against the Gaels for the first time since 2015.

MATCH SUMMARY

Iona fell behind early in the first set, 6-1. Junior Jamie Smith and senior Tess Connolly had a pair of kills in an attempt to chip away, but Canisius pushed its lead to as high as 10, 15-5. A six-point run, spurred by rookie Samantha Juran serving, brought the Maroon & Gold back within four, 15-11. The Golden Griffins called a timeout and won the serve back. Iona got it back to within three, 20-17, before a Canisius kill and a pair of Iona attack errors pushed the deficit back to six. The Golden Griffins took a 1-0 lead winning the first set, 25-18.

The Gaels held a 7-6 lead until a quick 4-1 spurt put the Golden Griffins ahead, 10-8. Canisius built its lead to five, 15-10, and kept it the discrepancy that wide until a furious Iona comeback put the entire second set in question. Trailing 21-16, the Maroon & Gold clawed their way to a 24-24 draw, fending off two set points. The Golden Griffins called timeout and then got back-to-back kills from Leah Simmons and Camila Vasquez to close out the set, 26-24.

The Maroon & Gold called timeout early in the third set trailing 5-1. They eventually fell behind by eight, 10-2. But Iona would not fold. A masterful 12-1 run, which also lasted through a Golden Griffins timeout, gave the Maroon & Gold a 13-11 lead. With the score tied 15-15, the home team went on a four-point run to regain control. Canisius closed out the set, and the match, 25-19.
