NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College volleyball program fell in four sets (25-27, 16-25, 25-20, 21-25) to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference leading Fairfield Stags on Friday night. Sophomore
Cassandra Patsos led all players in the match with 15 kills. Junior
Jamie Smith had 14 kills, 17 assists and eight digs.
MATCH SUMMARY
The first set had six ties and five lead changes. Both Iona and Fairfield had 15 kills and one ace. The Gaels jumped out early and held a lead until the Stags tied the game at 17 apiece. A three-point run put Fairfield ahead 19-17, but back-and-forth the two MAAC foes went down the stretch. The score was tied at 22, 23, and 24. Iona earned a set-point serve at 25-24 following a solo block by Patsos, but three straight points from the Stags resulted in a 27-15 opening game decision.
Fairfield's Laura Seeger had five kills in the set. Patsos finished with five kills and six points for the Gaels. Senior
Jessica Paolucci started off the match with seven digs.
The second set belonged to the Stags. They rose to a 6-3 lead and elevated it to 12-7, forcing an Iona timeout. The Gaels attempted to break into the deficit but could never get within three points. It got to 17-14, but Fairfield responded with a 6-0 run to push the lead to 23-16. A kill from Joelle battles ended the frame, 25-16.
Iona had a match-low four kills in the second set. The Gaels hit -.143 as a team. Fairfield also had a match-low in kills with eight. It hit .036 as a team. Six of the Stags eight kills came from Battles.
Head Coach
Esai Velez-Perez switched up the starting line up in the third set and sparked the Maroon & Gold. Senior
Julia Stewart began the game on the floor and contributed with steady play in a set that had eight ties and five lead changes.
The score was tied 12-12 when Paolucci gave the Maroon & Gold the lead with one of her three aces in the match.
Taylor Cole served it up not too much later and carried Iona to a 19-14 lead. The Stags got within three over the closing moments of the set, but a massive block from senior
Karla Johnson and Smith gave Iona service at set point. The Gaels closed out the set, 25-20, on another block by Johnson and Patsos.
Patsos had a monster third set with six kills on 14 swings. Iona had just four attack errors in the frame and hit .250 as a team.
Like the first set, Iona and Fairfield tied in successful kills in the fourth and decisive set. The difference was that the Stags hit .242 while the Gaels hit .152. Fairfield's Luci Albertson had six kills and Mayda Garcia arose from nowhere with five kills. Smith had five kills in the fourth set and Patsos drove home four.
Again like the opening frame, Iona jumped out early in the fourth set. But the Stags battled back, took the lead 10-9, then kept itself in control till the very end. Iona got it tied once, 17-17 on a Stewart kill down the right sideline, but the momentum didn't last long. Fairfield went on a 5-0 run to make it 22-17. Back-to-back blocks by the Stags ended the match in four.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Iona is just the second MAAC school to win a set against the Stags this season. Siena won a single set in each of their two matches against Fairfield.
- Rookie Samantha Juran had a team-best 19 assists for Iona. Paolucci led the Gaels with 19 digs and three aces.
- Smith and Patsos combined for 32.5 of Iona's 60 combined points.
- Iona's 28 attack errors are the most since its five-set defeat against Niagara on Sept. 29. It is tied for a season-worst and has happened three times.
- Iona's 12 service errors are the second most for the Gaels this season, and most in a four-set match.
- The Gaels finished the match with a .111 hitting percentage and 54.2 sideout percentage.
