STONY BROOK, NY – The Iona College women's basketball program fell on the road to Stony Brook University at Island Federal Arena, 59-40. A dominant second quarter allowed for the Seawolves to pull away from the Gaels and maintain a double-digit lead throughout the majority of the second half
GAME SUMMARY
The first quarter was a battle of wills for Iona and Stony Brook. Both teams combined for 15 turnovers and collectively shot 6-for-30 from the floor. At one point the Seawolves missed 10 straight shots. The Gaels led 9-5 at the end of the first quarter holding Stony Brook to 2-for-18 (11%) shooting. Aiste Vaitekunaite playing just three minutes where she pulled down two rebounds and drew a Stony Brook foul.
The home team discovered their shooting stroke in the second quarter. The Seawolves shot 11-for-16 in the frame, led primarily by India Pagan who scored 12 points throughout the period. The Gaels called timeout with 1:47 left before intermission trailing 24-17. They saw the deficit grow to as large as 12, 29-17, before sophomore
Juana Camilion drained a three-pointer to pull her team back within nine entering halftime.
Senior
Morgan Rachu and Camilion each had seven points in the first half on 6-for-13 shooting. The rest of the team shot 3-for-11 from the floor. Rachu had four rebounds, all in the first quarter and redshirt junior
Monica Barefield had two first half assists in her first start of the season.
As the third quarter unwound, Stony Brook matched its biggest lead of the game, 35-23, then added on quickly with a fast break layup off a Maroon & Gold turnover. Iona called timeout trailing by 14, but a continued 11-0 Stony Brook stretch made it 42-23 with minutes left in the third. Camilion ended a nearly six-minute scoreless drought for Iona with 3:08 left, but Stony Brook's lead grew to as large as 21 at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Seawolves maintained its 20-point cushion as the fourth quarter progressed. Iona went on its second extended scoreless drought before Barefield hit a three-pointer to make the score 59-38 with 1:29 left. She'd make the Maroon & Gold's last basket to make the final score, 59-40.
Iona finished the game shooting 32.7% from the floor and 19.0% from beyond the arc. The Gaels made their only two free throw attempts of the game. Stony Brook had three players score in double-figures and shot 38.8% as a team.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Rachu and Camilion each had a team-best nine points with four made field goals apiece.
- Mwau and Rachu each had five rebounds. Rachu, Barefield and redshirt junior Tori Lesko had two assists.
- Both Camilion and redshirt senior Jodi-Marie Ramil had one block. Four different players had a steal.
- Stony Brook's Pagan had 16 points on 8-for-14 shooting. Kaela Hilaire and Anastasia Warren both had 10 points. Hilaire also had four assists and five steals.
- Cheyenne Clark, Oksana Gouchie-Provencher Pagan all had seven rebounds.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Stony Brook had 17 offensive rebounds and 15 second chance points. Overall the Seawolves outrebounded the Gaels, 45-32.
- Iona had a season-low eight assists on its 17 made field goals. There were only 19 total assists in the game.
- The Gaels had 20+ turnovers and their opponents have 12+ steals in back-to-back games.
- In the definitive second quarter, Stony Brook had 18 points in the paint and Pagan was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor.
- Stony Brook is 8-5 all-time against Iona. The Seawolves have on the last three games, and four of the last five. The Gaels have not won in Stony Brook since December 2, 2010.
AROUND THE MAAC
- Villanova defeated Manhattan, 63-51. The Jaspers shot 30% from the floor but Emily LaPointe managed an effective 18 points on 6-for-14 shooting. She made three three-pointers.
- Cornell took down Niagara, 82-59. The Bears used a 20-9 third quarter to pull away. There were a combined 49 turnovers which directly resulted in 50 points.
