Iona Women Victorious, Men Lose as Gaels Split Dual Meet vs. Monmouth

The Iona women dominated from start to finish to win, winning 174.5 to 87.5 and raising their record to 4-3. The Iona men battled, but lost 148-114, moving to 3-2 on the year.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Before a near capacity crowd at the Hynes Center Pool, the Iona College men's and women's swimming and diving team hosted in the season's first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference dual meet. The Iona women dominated from start to finish to win, winning 174.5 to 87.5 and raising their record to 4-3. The Iona men battled, but lost 148-114, moving to 3-2 on the year.

MEET SUMMARY

The Iona women shined with seven different members winning races: Aly Chain in the 50-free (24.37); Isabella Nicholson in the 100-free (53.51); Isabelle Pabon in the 400-individual medley (4:39.18); Sydney Ruschmeier in the 500-free (5:23.88); Taylor Spillman in the 200-butterfly (2:11.28); Simone Sturrup in the 100-butterfly (59.75) and Tristan Urso in the 1,000-free (10:56.74).
 
The Iona men got victories from Daniel Hadary and Aidan Holbrook, who tied for the top spot in the 200-free at 1:45.16; Jackson Madonia took the 400-individual medley at 4:11.93; Conor Mullin grabbed the 200-butterfly at 1:54.41 and Jalen Ramjohn won the 100-butterfly at 50.87.
 
The women's 200-medley relay with Grace Curry (27.89), Julia Moser (30.39), Sturrup (26.25) and Chain (23.81) posted their fastest time of the season, winning the race at 1:48.34.
 
The men also had their fastest time in the 200-medley relay, earning second place with Spencer Moran (24.72); Madonia (26.55); Ramjohn (22.73) and Mullin (21.35) clocking in at 1:35.35. The men also notched their season best 400-free relay time at 3:10.12 with Moran (47.84); Jakub Korek (49.04); Holbrook (46.63) and Hadary (46.61) winning by .4.

COACH'S THOUGHTS

"I was very pleased with our efforts today and you have to hand it to Monmouth; they came out very aggressive and it showed in the final score of the men's meet. They have some very talented swimmers and we have a number of things to improve on," head coach Nick Cavataro said.

UP NEXT

Both teams return to action next Saturday with a first time ever head to head meet against Binghamton University at 1:00pm.
