BOULDER, CO – The Iona College men's basketball program fell in its final non-conference game to the Colorado Buffaloes at the CU Events Center on Sunday afternoon, 99-54. It was the first ever meeting between the two programs.
GAME SUMMARY
The Maroon & Gold struggled getting things going offensively in the first half. Trailing early on, the Gaels didn't score till the 14:33 mark when
Mo Thiam came off the bench a made a three-pointer. Trailing 15-5 at the under 12 media timeout,
E.J. Crawford became the first Iona starter to score with a triple to make it 16-8 Buffs.
The Gaels clawed to within eight, 21-13, with 5:09 left before halftime. The Buffaloes then doubled up the Maroon & Gold over the final five minutes of the first half hitting five of nine from the floor. Their lead grew to as large as 18 with 2:25 left and Iona entered the locker room at intermission trailing 35-19.
Colorado kept Iona shooting just 15% of its first 20 shots. The Gaels finished the first half hitting 5-for-29 (17.2%) from the floor and 2-for-15 (13.3%) from beyond the arc. The Buffaloes shot 44% from the floor and 50% from beyond the arc.
The leading scorers at intermission for the home team where Tyler Bey and D'Shawn Schwartz each with six points. Iona's Crawford and
Tajuan Agee both had five points.
Colorado's Evan Battey score eight points in the opening 3:55 of the second half and helped the Buffaloes to reach a 47-22 lead. The deficit grew to 30 at the next media timeout with 13:59 left.
The Buffaloes continued to surge in the second half. Their 25-5 run at the start of the second half led to a 60-24 lead approaching the under 12 media break. The Gaels manufactured a short offensive spark, forcing a Buffaloes timeout with 9:16 left. Iona matched its first half scoring with a
Dylan van Eyck dunk the occurred directly before the Buffs called timeout.
The Maroon & Gold and Buffaloes emptied their benches over the final 10 minutes as the lead never got less than 30 for the home team. Colorado earned the victory by a final score of 99 to 54.
Iona shot 41.9% in the second half. The Gaels hit four three pointers shooting 30.8% from beyond the arc. At the end of the game the Maroon & Gold finished shooting 30.0% overall and 21.4% from deep.
Colorado shot 66.7% from the floor and 68.8% from beyond the arc in the second half. The Buffs shot 56.7% overall in the game and 60.7% from distance.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Crawford scored 14 points in 32 minutes.
- Agee had nine points and eight rebounds. Defensively he had two blocks.
- Isaiah Washington came off the bench with nine points and five rebounds.
- Colorado had seven players scored in in double-figures. Schwartz had 14 points on four for eight shooting. McKinley Wright had 13 points and 10 assists.
- Battey had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Buffaloes.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Sunday's game was Isaiah Ross's first career start.
- Iona's 19 points and 17.2% shooting in the first half are both new season lows. The previous low was 23 points and 23.1% at La Salle (Nov. 9) in the season opener.
- It is the second straight game Iona has allowed an opponent to score 90+ points, shot 50% from the floor and collected less than 25 rebounds.
- It is the first time Iona has lost by 30-49 points since December 29, 2007 against Louisville.
- Cashaw saw his first minutes of the season, playing seven minutes and collecting a rebound and steal.
- The Maroon & Gold have shot less than 25.0% from beyond the arc for three straight games.

- Siena improved to 5-5 with a 74-62 win against the Holy Cross Crusaders. Jalen Pickett and Donald Carey combined for 43 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists.
- Upcoming MAAC games include Canisius traveling to play Pittsburgh on Monday, December 30 at noon. Rider treks to Madison, WI for a matchup against the Badgers on Tuesday, December 31.
