Pirates Sink the Gaels on Sunday Afternoon

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball team fell behind early and could never recover in an 89-37 loss to Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon.

GAME SUMMARY

After Shyan Mwai laced a three to open the scoring in the first minute of the game, the Pirates shut down Iona's offense. Seton Hall scored 22 unanswered points over the preceding nine minutes, eight of which came from Desiree Elmore. Gabrielle Joseph and De'jah Williams scored baskets in the final minute of the period to make it a 22-7 game after the opening 10 minutes of play.

Seton Hall used a 6-0 run in the first half minutes of the second quarter to extend its lead to 21 points. A triple from Mwai made it 30-12, but a 9-0 run for the Pirates followed and the Maroon & Gold found themselves in a 27-point hole with three minutes remaining in the half. Despite five points in the final two minutes of the half from Mwai, the Gaels trailed 39-17 at the end of the half.

Seton Hall opened the second half with nine consecutive points to extend its lead to 31 points. Lucia Becerra Perez's driving layup started the scoring for the Maroon & Gold in the third frame. Morgan Rachu got on the board with a bucket inside just over three minutes into the period. The Pirates closed out the final three minutes of the third on a 13-2 run and took a 71-25 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Gaels fell behind 81-30 midway through the final frame; after the Seton Hall basket, Williams scored inside and Rachu converted on both free throws. A Monica Barefield three pointer in the final minute would be the last basket between both sides, as Seton Hall cruised to an 89-37 victory.
