Baseball Loses To ETSU In Series Finale

JOHNSON CITY, TN – The Iona College baseball program dropped the final game of the three-game set against East Tennessee on Sunday afternoon, 14-4. Senior Niko Switalla, sophomore Michael Gorman and freshman Jake Field had a pair of hits to lead the Gaels.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona's initial three runs were scored by freshman Hunter Sibley, senior Joe DeMaio and Field. The lone RBI of the game for the Gaels came off the bat of Gorman. The other runs scored by the Maroon & Gold came via Bucs fielding errors.

ETSU scored the initial run in the third inning and held a 6-3 lead at the end of seven. The contest was blown open with the Bucs scoring eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. They had five hits and five walks in the frame. Ethan Cady had a double down the right field line to begin the scoring, and the final accenting punch came via a grand slam from Kyle Richardson.

Iona got one more run in the top of the ninth inning with freshman Shaun Hillis doubling home classmate Will Jennings.

The Bucs outhit the Gaels 14 to 11. Each team combined to leave 21 runners on base. The Gaels walked nine batters and had four wild pitches. Sophomore Chris Dodrill started the game was given the loss. He went 4.2 innings allowing four earn runs on seven hits and four walks.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Iona used six pitchers in the game. Dodrill was relieved by rookie Paul Sullivan, junior Jason Goetz, junior James Sharkey, sophomore James Gosweiler and junior Jason Antalek.
  • The Gaels had a pair of extra-base hits from senior Fran Kinsey and Hillis. Eight different Gaels had hits one the day.
  • ETSU batted .571 in advancement opportunities. They also had the lead-off man on base six of eight times and hit .455 with two outs.

UP NEXT

Iona returns to the diamond on Friday, Feb. 22 in the opening game of the UNCW Tournament at Brooks Field. That weekend the Gaels will do battle against Marshall, UNCW and Indiana State.
