Lacrosse Drops Road Contest To Lafayette, 14-6

EASTON, PA – The Iona Lacrosse team took the road for their third road game to start the young season and fell to the Lafayette Leopards 14-6 Tuesday night.

GAME SUMMARY

The Gaels gained an early advantage, scoring two of the game's first three goals. Christine Gironda tallied her second goal of the season and Sara Stewart connected with her fifth of the season with 21:42 remaining in the first half. After Lafayette knotted the score one minute later, both teams were held scoreless for the next 17 minutes when the host scored with 3:15 to play. The Leopards kept the momentum by scoring the next two over 1:31 and taking a 5-2 lead into the break.
 
48 ticks into the second half, Libby Miller pulled the Gaels back within two, but Lafayette scored the next two over the next three minutes to gain a 7-3 advantage. With 20 minutes to play, Emma Rippon connected for her second goal of the season, but Lafayette pulled away with seven unanswered goals. With 5:29 left to play, Rippon broke the Leopards' run and Kati Paavola hit Iona's final tally with 45 seconds left.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Shannon McCaffrey recorded 11 saves and allowed 12 goals.
  • Elyse Darcy came in relief, making one save.
  • Maureen Murphy was unsuccessful on five shot attempts but controlled six draws.
  • Alyssa Connell and Mary Kate Simpson led the Gaels defensively with two caused turnovers each.
  • Lafayette outshot the Gaels 14-6 including a 12-1 advantage on Free Position Shot Attempts
  • Iona and Lafayette were even on draw controls, each totaling 11.
  • Lafayette held the advantage in ground balls (27-17) and turnovers (17-25).
