WILMINGTON, NC – The Iona College baseball program dropped the final game of the 2019 UNCW Tournament against Indiana State Sunday morning. The Sycamores defeated the Maroon & Gold, 10-0.
GAME SUMMARY
Indiana State took advantage of 11 Gael walks and scored its 10 runs over four separate innings. The Sycamores had more than three batters in all but one inning. They stranded 12 runners on base.
Iona fell behind 3-0 following the top of the fourth inning. Freshman
Michael Untracht was forced to vacate after giving three free passes and two runs scored. Junior
Jason Goetz came on in early relief and saw an inherited runner score courtesy of a fielding miscue.
Rookie
Matthew Scanlon toed the rubber with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and began the top of the sixth. He retired the first batter but then walked four straight batters. He was replaced by sophomore
Michael DeSanti. Iona's new hurler was greeted with a bases clearing double from Hunter Lewis.
Indiana State's Day Dugnan hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh and Roby Enriquez closed the scoring with a two-run double in the top of the ninth inning.
Iona had two hits on the day from rookie
Hunter Sibley and sophomore
Derek Becker. Both were stranded in the sixth and ninth inning, respectively. Tyler Whitbread started the game for the Sycamores and went eight innings. He allowed just one hit and one walk. The Gaels struck out once but were induced into 10 fly outs and 12 ground outs.

Iona's next games are on the road against UNC Asheville beginning on Friday, Mar. 1. It'll be a three-game series against the Bulldogs from Greenwood Field in Asheville, NC.
