Siena's Big Fourth Quarter Downs Iona

The Saints outscored Iona 28-10 in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a 9-0 run that made it a 16-point game with six minutes left.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball team hung tough for three quarters, but a late surge by Siena pushed them past the Gaels on Thursday night. The Saints outscored Iona 28-10 in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a 9-0 run that made it a 16-point game with six minutes left.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona opened things up with a strong first quarter, but they had to compete with Siena's Lala Watts. Rookie Gabrielle Joseph was received two perfect passes inside and helped the Gaels build a quick 6-0 lead. Watts answered with five straight points of her own. A Shyan Mwai three was then sandwiched in between another two buckets from Watts. The Maroon & Gold led 12-9 after one quarter.

The Gaels have struggled in the second quarter a lot this season, and the trend looked like it would continue tonight. The Saints scored nine straight over a two-minute span and led by six. Iona managed to battle back though, and a Monica Barefield three-pointer tied things up at 22 with a minute to play in the half. Entering the locker rooms, Siena led by one.

Barefield was the savior for the Gaels offensively again in the third frame; the redshirt sophomore scored the first seven points for the Maroon & Gold and kept the team within striking distance. Iona found themselves within one point again late in the period after Morgan Rachu buried one from downtown, but a late bucket from the Saints gave them a three-point edge after three quarters.

Siena was responsible for 15 of the first 17 points to go up on the board in the final quarter. The first frame was all Lala Watts for Siena, and the closing act was showcased by Maddie Sims and her 11 points. The Saints opened up a 21-point lead with a little over a minute to play, their largest lead of the game at the time.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Barefield scored a team-high 14 points. Her 20 points in the first meeting between the two teams was also a team-best.
  • Mwai started for the first time since December, matching her career-best total with 12 points on 5-11 shooting.
  • Siena shot 1-12 (8.3%) from beyond the arc, the lowest opponent three-point shooting percentage since Fordham hit just 5.9% of its tries from deep.
  • Watts' 11 points were a new career-high; nine of the points coming in the nine minutes of regulation.
  • The Maroon & Gold's bench scored in double-figures for the fourth straight contest. Barefield was responsible for every single bench point scored by the unit.
