Lacrosse Drops Season-Opener To Army 18-8

WEST POINT, NY – The Iona lacrosse program opened up its 2019 campaign at Army West Point, falling to the Black Knights 18-8. The Gaels trailed at the half by four but Army used a 9-0 run to pull away in the second half.

GAME SUMMARY

The Black Knights were the first to find the back of the net, just over three minutes into the contest. Sara Stewart's goal, assisted by Libby Miller knotted the score four minutes later. Army regained the lead with 20:14 remaining in the half before Danielle Keenan and Leah Marshall put the Gaels ahead with 16:59 left. Army scored five more times before the horn sounded, and held the Gaels off the scoreboard to take a 7-3 lead into the break.
 
Army continued to roll in the second half scoring the next four tallies before Marshall's second score of the game halted the run and brought the deficit back to seven, 11-4. After the Black Knights answered one minute later, Megan Raftery and Paavola both connected on free position attempts within a 30 second span to pull the Gaels back within six with 17:44 remaining. Army scored three more times before Marshall struck to complete a hat-trick and was followed by Carpenter's first collegiate tally. The Gaels allowed three unanswered goals over the final 6:25.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Freshman Leah Marshall impressed in her collegiate debut, scoring a hat trick on four shots.
  • Senior captain Danielle Keenan scored once on four attempts, grabbed three ground balls, controlled two draws and caused one turnover.
  • In net, Shannon McCaffrey made five saves and allowed 13 goals, Elyse Darcy stopped six shots and allowed five goals.
  • Iona was out-shot 40-22 and turned the ball over 23 times compared to Army's 16.
  • Four of the Iona eight goals were assisted.
  • The Gaels caused nine turnovers and grabbed 16 ground balls out of 35 attempts.
  • Iona had eight free position attempts, scoring on three.
  • Army controlled 20-28 draws.
