Iona Baseball Earns Road Win At Stony Brook

Gaels put forth best offensive outing of the season

STONY BROOK, NY – The Maroon & Gold woke up the lumber and put together their highest scoring output of the season in a 12-8 road come-from-behind win against the Stony Brook Seawolves. Three different Gaels had three hits and nine players had at least one run batted in.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona began the scoring in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Sam Punzi singled home the first run, scoring junior Brian Picone. Stony Brook took the lead in the bottom half of the second inning on a two-run blast from Brandon Alamo.
 
The Gaels jumped back in front in the top of the third on three hits from senior Fran Kinsey, Punzi and rookie Shaun Hillis. Hillis' hit a double that drove home the then go-ahead run; it was the first of five extra-base hits on the day.
 
Trailing 3-2 in the fourth, the Seawolves put up five runs on five hits and retook their second lead of the game. Alamo started the damage with a leadoff two-bagger. He'd come around to score and initially tie the game on a double from Evan Giordano. Stony Brook had five consecutive runners reach base, and following a fly out to end the stretch, Chris Hamilton hit a two-run dinger to make it 7-2.
 
Junior Jason Antalek started the game and was chased midway through the fourth. His final pitching line ran 3.0 innings, five runs allowed on six hits and three walks. Junior Henry Conroy came in relief and threw the conclusion of the fourth and the complete fifth, allowing the two runs on Hamilton's homer.
 
In the sixth inning the Maroon & Gold had their won four run foray. Their first six runners reached base and freshmen Will Jennings, Daniel Palermo and Picone each had RBI play appearances. Kinsey also contributed an RBI sacrifice fly.
 
The trio of freshmen Michael Untracht, Paul Sullivan and Drew Helmstetter combined to throw the final four full innings. Stony Brook's final run came in its last at-bat in the bottom of the ninth.
 
The Gaels added a sole insurance run in the top of the seventh. Freshman Hunter Sibley singled to centerfield to score graduate Jon Budesa. Iona Head Coach Paul Panik saw his team put the finishing touches on with four more scores in the top of the eighth. The top of the order set the table up with four straight players reaching base, all of whom came around to score.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Five freshman drove in a run for Iona. Kinsey, junior Stephan Furman and Punzi all drove home a team-high two runs.
  • Picone, Kinsey and Punzi all scored a team-high two runs. Hillis, Kinsey and Picone each had a team-best three hits.
  • Sullivan went two scoreless innings and is credited with his second win of the season. He has both of Iona's wins this season.
  • Iona finished the game with season bests in runs (12), hits (16), doubles (5) and hit by pitches (2).
  • Picone has five runs scored in his last three games. He is batting 6-for-14 in Iona's last three games against Hofstra, Fordham and Stony Brook.
  • Kinsey has a six-game hitting streak. He has five runs, four runs batted in and four doubles during the streak.

Iona hosts St. John's tomorrow at City Part for its home-opener. The Gaels and Red Storm begin at 3 p.m.
