Lacrosse Wins Overtime Thriller At Sacred Heart, 8-7

FAIRFIELD – After dropping it's first seven games this season, the Iona Lacrosse program rebounded with a thrilling overtime victory at Sacred Heart. Christine Gironda found a cutting Katherine Meyer just 43 seconds into the extra period to give the Maroon & Gold it's first victory of the year.

GAME SUMMARY

The teams played to an even 4-4 tie after the first 30 minutes. Kati Paavola put the Gaels on the board 47 seconds into the game. Sacred Heart's Taylor Sweeney knotted the score, but Christine Gironda put the Gaels back ahead with 18:05 remaining in the half. Sacred Heart tallied the next three goals before Paavola connected for her second of the game with 7:51 left on the clock. Emma Rippon tied the score six minutes later.

Sacred Heart pulled ahead quickly in the second half, scoring two goals in the first 2:45. Iona began to chip away with 18:10 to play, as Paavola completed her hat trick. Nine minutes later, Rippon took advantage of a free position chance and three minutes later Gironda found a cutting Paavola to put the Gaels ahead 7-6. With 4:15 remaining, a foul by Carly Young gave Sacred Heart's Cassie Cesario a free position chance, who put it past Shannon McCaffrey to knot the score at seven. The teams traded chances in the final minutes with McCaffrey stopping Cesario, and a Gironda shot was stopped by goalkeeper Shana Hecht.

In overtime, Gironda controlled the opening draw and found Meyer who buried her sixth goal of the season for the game-winner with 5:17 remaining.

For the game, the Gaels outshot the Pioneers 28-20 with 18 coming on net. Iona held the advantage in turnovers (12-17) and fouls committed (21-26). The teams were even in draw controls (8-8) and Sacred Heart held the advantage in ground balls (17-13).
