DURHAM, NH – After playing to a 5-4 deficit in the first half, the Iona Lacrosse team (1-8) was outscored by New Hampshire in the second half 10-4, falling to the Wildcats 15-8.
GAME SUMMARY
It didn't take long for
Shannon McCaffrey to pick up her 400
th career save, stopping the first Wildcat attempt three minutes into the contest. McCaffrey only trails Maria Ortiz '14 who holds Iona's record with 437 career stops.
Emma Rippon was the first to find the back of the net, rocketing one off a great feed from
Christine Gironda. Six minutes later, she took advantage of a free position attempt, putting it past goalkeeper Issy Torres to notch her seventh goal of the season. New Hampshire scored the next three over a 2:43 span to take a one-goal lead with 16:08 remaining in the first half.
Mariah Metcalf evened the score on a free position attempt, and after a Devan Miller tally,
Kati Paavola barreled through an opposing defender for her ninth goal of the season. With 51 ticks remaining in the half, Catherine Sexton found an open Mickenzie Larivee who fired one past a sprawling McCaffrey to give the Wildcats a 5-4 lead after 30 minutes.
New Hamsphire stormed the Gaels early in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals without conceding possession to the Gaels to take a five-goal advantage with 26:20 remaining. After Paavola shot high on a free position attempt,
Madi Kochanek found
Katherine Meyer who skipped it past Torres to pull the Gaels within four, 9-5. New Hampshire scored two more times over the next eight minutes before a patient Gironda from behind the net passed to Rippon to complete the rookie's hat trick. On the Gaels' next possession,
Libby Miller dished out an assist to Paavola for her 10
th goal of the season and sixth in two games.
New Hampshire scored four of the final five goals, with Iona's tally coming from
Libby Miller, who spun away from a Wildcat defender to notch her second goal of the season.
