Lacrosse Opens MAAC Play With Defeat At Siena

Loudonville, NY – The Iona College lacrosse team was bested by Siena 17-7 Saturday afternoon at Hickey Field. Despite 21 shots on goal, Siena's Sammy Horton stopped 14 Iona attempts in the defeat.
 

GAME SUMMARY

Iona managed one goal over the first 22:28 of the first half. The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead before reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Kati Paavola cashed in Iona's fifth shot attempt to bring the Gaels back within a pair. After two more Siena tallies, Megan Collins connected for her second goal of the season with 7:32 remaining in the half. Siena's Kaitlyn Dowsett scored the next two with the former coming on a free position attempt. Nicole McNeely put the Saints up six but was followed up a minute later by Maureen Murphy's first goal of the season. McNelly put one past Shannon McCaffrey with 1:30 remaining to give the host a 9-3 lead after 30 minutes.
 
Siena padded the lead scoring three unanswered goals in the first two minutes of the second half. With 2:41 gone by, Madi Kochanek found Katherine Meyer who buried her eighth goal of the season to pull Iona back within eight. After Siena's Kaitlyn Lembo added to the Saints advantage, Kochanek struck twice to cut the deficit to 13-6. Siena responded with three more goals before Erin O'Donnell halted the run with 4:47 to play. Siena scored the game's final goal with 1:10 remaining.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Shannon McCaffrey made five stops in net, allowing all 17 goals.
  • Siena held the advantage in shot attempts, ground balls, draw controls, and turnovers
  • Kochanek led Iona in scoring, netting two goals
