WASHINGTON, DC – George Washington defeated Iona in the opening of their three-game series on Friday afternoon. Iona hit into three untimely double-plays and had a late chance to tie before the Colonials widened the margin.
GAME SUMMARY
George Washington took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The runs were produced with two outs after Iona starter
Stephen Hansen got two initial ground outs. Noah Levin had a triple to left field that scored Nate Fassnacht and Dom D'Alessandro.

Iona forced an early Colonial pitching change with a threat in the second inning. Senior

Derek Becker loading the bases with one out. Jaret Edwards came on in relief Elliott Raimo and induced a rally killing double-play.

The Gaels scratched a run across in the top of the third with sophomore

Jon Budesa. Iona got on the scoreboard despite hitting into a double-play for the second straight inning. The Maroon & Gold scored again in the top of the fourth with Switalla crossing the plate on a Becker fielder's choice ground out. Again, for the third straight inning, Iona hit into a double-play to limit the scoring potential.

The Colonials retook the lead with another two-out rally in the fifth inning. Cade Fergus tripled to deep center field and then scored on a one-bagger from Steve Barmakian.

Trailing 3-2, Iona had a great chance to tie the game or take the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Junior
Brian Picone singled up the middle to and was advanced to second on a one-out single from Punzi. It became first and third after a sacrifice fly off the bay of junior
Stephen Furman. George Washington made a pitching change and brought in Keagan McGinnis. Iona's chance was squandered with Switalla striking out with the tying run 90-feet away.

George Washington broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Maroon & Gold were retired in order in their final at-bat.

NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Picone and Punzi each had a team-high two hits. Switalla had Iona's lone extra-base hit of the day.
- Iona's three double-plays came in successive innings. Senior Fran Kinsey grounded into one and freshman Daniel Palermo hit into a pair of twin-killings.
- Hansen went seven-plus innings as Iona's starter. His final line read six earned runs allowed on 11 hits and one walk. Before entering the eighth inning, he had just three runs allowed on eight hits.
- Rookie Drew Helmstetter pitched one inning in relief. George Washington had two hits off the rookie.
- Edwards the key cog for the Colonials in his relief effort. He worked around seven hits in 6.1 innings through. He allowed two runs, one earned, on 84 pitches.
