STOCKTON, CA – The Iona College softball team lost to Pacific 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon. Iona managed just two hits on the day and a solo homerun did the Gaels in as they wrapped up their west coast trip.

GAME SUMMARY

Freshman Jessica Chilcott singled in the first inning with two away but Kimmie Chiapparelli struck out swinging for the third out. Pacific had a runner in scoring position in the first inning, but freshman Kara Zazzaro worked out of potential trouble to keep things scoreless after one full frame.

Zazzaro retired Sutherlin to begin the bottom of the third inning, the fifth straight batter she set down. The rookie had Carly Lucchetti down 0-2 in the count, but she worked it full and bounced a single through the middle, the Tigers' second base knock of the day. Lucchetti stole second but was stranded when Zazzaro got a lineout and a ground ball to second, ending the third inning.

The rookie from Southington, CT retired the Tigers in order in both the fourth and fifth innings. She had set down eight consecutive batters before Lucchetti launched a solo homerun to right field to give Pacific the lead in the sixth.

Pacific went down in order to end the sixth and Iona came to the dish looking to send the Tigers back to the dugout for another half inning. Junior Ciarra DiGuilio grounded out to second to begin the inning; Jasmine Temple drew a walk to put the tying run on base with less than two outs. Hailey Reed struck out the final two Gaels to end the game.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Iona stranded a base runner in each of the first four innings; none of the Gaels' four runners advanced past first base over the course of the game.
  • The lone run of the contest came via a solo blast from Pacific's Carly Lucchetti in the sixth inning.
  • Kara Zazzaro was on the bump for all six innings of the loss, completing her sixth game of the season. Her ERA now sits at 1.91 after her eighth appearance of her rookie campaign.
  • Pacific starter Hailey Reid won her sixth game of the season, allowing just two hits across seven innings.
  • Marisa Gergel's third-inning single was Iona's second of the game and the last one they would record for the contest. The Maroon & Gold had just two base runners over the last four frames.
