FAIRFIELD, CT – A string of four-goal rallies by the Fairfield Stags was too much for the Gaels to overcome, with the Maroon & Gold falling short 17-12 Wednesday at Rafferty Stadium.
GAME SUMMARY
The Stags jumped out to a 4-0 advantage with Iona registering only one shot before connecting for three scores of their own. The run started with a Leah Marshall score and was followed up by Caton Brisbin and Madi Kochanek. After the Stags scored two unanswered tallies, Kochanek and Meyer brought the Gaels back within one with 11:16 remaining in the half. Fairfield scored two of the final three goals of the half, taking a 8-6 lead, with Iona's goal coming from Brisbin.
The second half started similar to the first, with the Stags scoring two goals over the first three minutes. The teams remained scoreless for the next six minutes before Kochanek and Gabriele Thornton went back-to-back in a 1:15 span to pull the Gaels within one, 10-9. Fairfield put the Gaels away with four unanswered goals over the next eight minutes before Meyer stopped the run with 10:39 to play. Emma Ripon and Kati Paavola later added scores in the defeat.
