QUEENS, NY – The Iona College baseball program dropped its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday afternoon. St. John's University defeated the Gaels 6-1 at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Red Storm held the top four batters in the Maroon & Gold batting over to a combined 0-for-13 with eight strikeouts.
GAME SUMMARY
Rookie
Michael Untracht started on the mound for the Gaels. St. John's got one run right away in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Markey drove home Mike Antico with a single up the middle. Markey stole second base but was stranded in scoring position.
The Red Storm tallied two more in the bottom of the fourth inning. Markey reached base being hit by a pitch and he was brought home two batters later on a two-run home run by Ryan Hogan.
Untracht was replaced in the bottom of the fifth inning by sophomore
Michael DeSanti. St. John's tallied two runs to make it 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Red Storm put together three hits, including an RBI one-bagger by Brandon Bossard. Hogan came around to score for the fifth run on a sacrifice fly by Josh Greene. St. John's final run came in the bottom of the seventh against new Iona pitcher, junior
Jason Antalek.
Iona's lone run came in the top of eighth inning. Senior
Fran Kinsey walked on five pitches with one out. Sophomore
Sam Punzi reached base on an error and Kinsey was able to advance to third. Rookie
Jake Field drove home the run hitting a sacrifice fly to right field.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- St. John's improves its record against Iona since 2003 to 20-2. Iona has lost 10 straight in the series. Its last win came in 2013.
- The Red Storm have held the Maroon & Gold to one run scored in each of its last four games. Iona has not scored more than four runs in a game since its 7-6 win in 2013.
- Iona tied a season-high with 14 strikeouts. The only other game the Gaels struck out 14 times was against Seton Hall on Mar. 30.
- Junior Stephen Furman had a team-best two hits. The Gaels had five hits as a team. Underclassmen Daniel Palermo, Michael Gorman and Will Jennings all had one hit.
- Iona used four pitchers on the day. Lone pitcher to not allow a run was rookie Hunter Sibley, who retired the side in order in the eighth.
UP NEXT
Iona has just conference series going forward for the remainder of the season. The Gaels are home for the next two weekends against Quinnipiac and Monmouth. They end the season on the road at Saint Peter's beginning on Thursday, May 16.
