McCaffrey Sets Saves Record In Defeat To Canisius

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Despite mounting a four-goal comeback in the second half, the Iona Lacrosse team (1-12, 0-4) was unable to upend the Canisius Golden Griffins Saturday at Demske Sports Complex, falling 15-12.

GAME SUMMARY

With 12:17 remaining in the second half, Shannon McCaffrey posted her 10th save of the game, propelling her into sole-possession of first place in program history with 438 career stops. She surpassed Maria Ortiz '14 and the two stand as the only players in program history to record 400 or more saves.

It didn't take long for Katherine Meyer to score her 10th goal of the season, scoring just 90 seconds into the first half. Canisius rallied with two goals before Madi Kochanek (7) and Leah Marshall (15) put the Gaels ahead with 20:44 to play. After an Iona turnover, Canisius held possession for three minutes, scoring twice. Iona scored two of the next three to tie the game at 5-5, helped by Emma Rippon's 14 goal of the season and a Kochanek tally off an assist from Christine Gironda. Iona garnered only one shot over the next 10 minutes as Canisius built a three-goal advantage before Gabriele Thornton stopped the run with 1:46 remaining in the half. With two seconds remaining, Canisius padded it's lead to 9-6.
 
After Canisius took a four-goal advantage, it's largest lead of the game, the Gaels went to work scoring the next four to knot the game at 10-10. The rally started when Emma Rippon took advantage of a free-position attempt and three minutes later secured her second consecutive hat trick to bring the Gaels within two. The Griffs took four shot attempts, with three sailing wide and one hitting off the post before Kochanek cut the Iona deficit to one. With 19:29 left, Marshall capped the rally with her 16th goal of the season.
 
Iona continued the pressure, taking two more shots, but both were stopped by Canisius goalkeeper Shannon Maroney. With 15:23 to play, Canisius took the lead, and three minutes later, McCaffrey made recorded her record-breaking 438th career save. Kochanek knotted the score at 11-11, but the Gaels only scored one goal over the final 11:37 of play, as Canisius tacked on four more goals.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • McCaffrey finished the game with a season-best 13 saves.
  • Canisius outshot Iona 39-25 and also held advantages in ground balls (24-18) and draw controlls (22-7).
  • Iona forced six turnovers and turned the ball over 17 times.
  • The Gaels scored 10+ goals for the second straight game after not recording a double-digit effort in the first 11.
  • Kochanek recorded a career-high four goals on six shots.
  • Marshall and Rippon tallied their third and second consecutive hat tricks.
