Iona Volleyball Falls In Straight Sets To CCSU Blue Devils

STORRS, CT – The Iona College volleyball team fell in its second match of the Connecticut Challenge to Central Connecticut State University on Friday afternoon. The Blue Devils defeated the Maroon & Gold in straight sets (13-25, 14-25, 18-25).

MATCH SUMMARY

Iona's efforts in the match improved as play continued throughout the three sets.

In set three, there were seven ties and four lead changes. Tied 9-9, CCSU went on a 7-0 run to take a 16-9 lead and force a Maroon & Gold timeout. The Gaels tied to fight back with a strong closing effort from junior Jamie Smith but the Blue Devils put the finishing touches entering the weekend.

Iona and Central Connecticut had six ties and one lead change in the first two sets. In set one, the Gaels had 11 kills and a .053 hitting percentage and .289 kill percentage. In set two, the Maroon & Gold had a match-low seven kills and a .000 hitting percentage and .259 attack percentage. The Gaels best hitting percentage came in the final game at .128.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Smith tied a season-best again with nine kills. It's the third time she's reached that level this season, collecting nine against New Hampshire (Sept. 1) and UConn (Sept. 5). Smith also had Iona's only ace of the match.
  • Redshirt Senior Jessica Paolucci had a team-best 13 digs and junior Tess Connolly had a season-best 10 digs. Connolly has had 19 digs over the last two matches after a combined 11 in the first three matches.
  • Sophomore Cassandra Patsos did not start but had a strong outing over seven kills, five digs and two blocks. She hitting percentage of .312 and .438 kill percentage.
  • Senior Karla Johnson finished the match with eight points, six kills and two solo blocks.
  • The Maroon & Gold at 4-11 all-time against Central Connecticut. The Blue Devils have wo nine of the last 10 matches. The Gaels win came in 2010 at a neutral site in New York City.
