STORRS, CT – The Iona College volleyball team wrapped up the UConn Challenge falling to Boston College in straight sets (21-25, 21-25, 9-25).
MATCH SUMMARY
The first set started with Iona and Boston College trading point. A brief 4-0 spurt from the Eagles allowed them to take a 7-3 lead. BC maintained the edge throughout the rest of the set, allowing the Maroon & Gold to get within one seven different times and tie it twice, but not relenting the advantage. Iona lost the first set, 21-25. It hit .152 as a team with a .303 kill percentage.
Iona started set two with a free point after Boston College began out of rotation. Again back-and-forth action ensues with the margin never getting larger than three points until BC took a 15-11 lead. The Eagles increase it to 18-12 and head coach
Esai Velez-Perez called timeout to rally the troops. Boston College closed out the set keeping the Gaels at bay, 21-25. The Gaels hit .219 as a team and achieved an attack percentage of .375.
The Maroon & Gold trailed early in the third set and called a timeout trailing, 10-2. Boston College closed out the straight set decision with a 9-25 final game.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Senior Tess Connolly and sophomore Cassandra Patsos each had a team-best seven kills. Patsos had a team-high 22 attack attempts.
- Junior Jamie Smith led the Gaels with 15 assists. It's her highest total since her rookie season when she had 21 at Canisius. Smith also had a season-best five blocks.
- Redshirt senior Jessica Paolucci had a team-best 10 digs.
- For the second time this season, the Maroon & Gold had zero service aces. They had five service errors.
- Iona is now 0-2 all-time against Boston College. The Eagles bested the Maroon & Gold in their first matchup in 2003.
UP NEXT
Iona plays in a non-conference match against Seton Hall in South Orange, NJ on Wednesday, Sept. 11. The Gaels and Pirates play at 7:00 p.m. in Walsh Gymnasium.
