POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Iona College men's basketball team lost to the Marist Red Foxes in the McCann Center on Sunday afternoon, 83-73. The Gaels trailed by as many as a 31, but a furious comeback in the five minutes brought the game to within single digits in the final minute.
GAME SUMMARY
Marist was jumping off the team and had the Maroon & Gold on their heels early. Jordan Jones scored the first six points for the Red Foxes and later a 7-0 run pushed the home team ahead, 15-8 with 13:01 to go in the first half. Iona saw its deficit increased to 23-11 at the under-12 media timeout.
Compounding the troubles for the Gaels were
Isaiah Washington and
Tajuan Agee both playing limited minutes due to foul trouble in the first half. Combined the pair played 13 minutes, each missing one shot.
On the defense end, the Maroon & Gold did all they could to stop Marist's Matthew Herasme, but the man was simply unconscious from beyond the arc. He led all-scorers in the first half with 15 points, making all five of his attempts from long range. Throw in nine opening period rebounds for good measure.
Iona trailed at halftime 43-32. It was a season-best for points score in a half for the Red Foxes. They shot 60.9% from the floor and 53.3% from deep. In comparison, the Gaels shot 38.5% in the opening 20 minutes, and 38.9% from deep.
Asante Gist and
E.J. Crawford combined for 21 points on 6-for-14 shooting.
Marist began the second half on a six-point spurt and with less than five minutes gone in the second half, it had a 58-38 lead over Iona. Three minutes later, it was a 26 points advantage. The Red Foxes lead grew as large as 31, 78-47, with 6:14 to go.
Ove the final 5:02, the Maroon & Gold battled back with a 22-5 run, during which they scored 20 straight points. The lineup of Washington,

Colton Cashaw and
Mo Thiam closed out the game and brought the Gaels to within nine twice over the final 51 seconds. They held Marist without a field goal over the final 4:44 of the game.
Iona shot 39.0% overall and 32.4% from beyond the arc. It made 15-of-18 from the free throw line. Marist shot 54.2% from the floor and 48.0% from deep. The Maroon & Gold had 25 points on 19 Red Fox turnovers. Marist outscored Iona in the paint, 26-18.
Marist has now won two straight games against Iona after having lost 10 straight to the Gaels.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Gist scored a team-high 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting.
- Washington had 14 points and a team-best five assists. Crawford also had 14 points and was 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
- Thiam tied a season-best with 13 points off the bench.
- Perez scored a season-best seven points.
- Thiam and Cashaw both had three steals off the bench.
- Marist was led by Herasme with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jones and Michael Cubbage each scored 14 points. Michael Cubbage had four assists.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Iona opponents have made eight or more three-point field goals in three of its last four games.
- The Gaels had 13 second chance points on just five offensive rebounds.
- The Maroon & Gold had a season-high 14 steals. They had just 15 steals over their last three games combined.
- Ross has made a three-pointer in six straight games.
- Agee was held scoreless for the first time as a student-athlete at Iona.
- Marist committed nine turnovers over the final 4:19 of the game during Iona's offensive run. They had just three turnovers in the second half prior to that.
AROUND THE MAAC
- Niagara completed the sweep of the weekend with a 72-71 win over Siena. Greg Kuakumensah had 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting in 26 minutes. The Purple Eagles shot 50.0% from the floor and 50.0% from deep.
- Canisius earned its second win of the weekend with a 95-86 win over Rider at the Koessler Athletics Center. Malik Johnson had a team-high 18 points and 11 assists in a full 40 minutes for the Golden Griffins.
