Iona WBB Defeats Saint Peter's on Monday Afternoon

Behind 10+ point performances from four different players, the Iona College women’s basketball team secured its first home win of the campaign and moved to .500 in league play.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Behind 10+ point performances from four different players, the Iona College women's basketball team secured its first home win of the campaign and moved to .500 in league play. Freshman Paulla Weekes recorded the first double-double of her career, grabbing 13 rebounds and adding 13 points.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona and Saint Peter's traded baskets back and forth over the entire first period. At the midway point of the quarter, a Juana Camilion triple gave the Gaels a 7-5 lead. A layup by Gabrielle Joseph with just under two minutes remaining in the opening frame pushed the Gaels ahead 10-7. The Peacocks ended the period with five straight points, heading into the second quarter with a 12-10 advantage.
 
Freshman Paulla Weekes got on the board to start the second quarter, tying things at 12 on the opening possession. Another 5-0 run over a two-minute span for Saint Peter's gave them a 19-14 lead, it's biggest of the game to that point. The Maroon & Gold answered with six straight points of their own, re-taking a one-point lead.
 
The visitors would end the half on a 7-0 run, holding Iona scoreless for the final 3:41 of the quarter. Saint Peter's headed into the locker room with a 26-20 lead over Iona.
 
The third quarter was highlighted by a 15-0 run for the Gaels that turned a 32-28 deficit into a 43-32 advantage. Iona held Saint Peter's without a made field goal for the final 5:20 of the third period. Two late free throws made by Gabrielle Harris ended the Iona run and cut the Peacock deficit to nine points entering the fourth quarter.
 
Saint Peter's never trimmed the deficit to anything lower than seven points. Iona got three-pointers from Camilion, Mwai and Weekes, the latter of which gave the Gaels a 52-41 lead with 6:36 to play. Both sides traded free throws over the final 90 seconds and the Maroon & Gold secured their first home win of the season.

STATISTICAL LEADERS

  • Mwai finished with a game-high 20 points, the second straight 20+ scoring game for the sophomore. She was 6-8 from the charity stripe, setting a new career-mark for free throws made.
  • Weekes corralled a game and career-best 13 rebounds, five of which were on the offensive glass.
  • Camilion's six assists were the most on either side. Mwai tied a career-high with three helpers of her own.
  • Camilion and Mwai each knocked down four shots from behind the arc.
  • Camilion's two blocks were the high mark of the afternoon. Her four steals was also tied for a game-best; Taiah Thornton had four takeaways of her own.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Weekes notched the first double-double of her career, registering 13 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. She also added three steals on the defensive end.
  • Joseph scored a season-high eight points on 4-5 FG. The sophomore added four rebounds as well.
  • Four players scored in double-figures for Iona. Camilion (14), Lesko (11), Mwai (20) and Weekes (13) combined for 58 of Iona's 69 points.
  • Camilion, Lesko and Mwai combined to score 21 of Iona's 23 points in the third quarter, including all 15 on the Gaels' 15-0 run that turned momentum.
  • Iona's 49 second-half points tied a season-high. The Gaels shot 16-30 in the final 20 minutes of action.
  • The lead changed hands seven times over the course of the game. Seven different ties were broken across the afternoon. 
  • The Maroon & Gold secured a season-best 41 rebounds, 16 of which were offensive, also a season-high for the team. Iona converted the offensive boards into 17 second-chance points.
  • The Gaels also tied a season-high with 11 steals and three blocks.
  • Iona's 10-point win was its largest margin of victory of the season thus far.

UP NEXT

The Gaels will enjoy the rest of the week off before heading across town to face Manhattan on Saturday night. Tip is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN3.
