Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jack Clark

Iona WBB Falls to Saint Peter's

Sophomore Paulla Weekes registered a double-double in the loss, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball team dropped the second game of its conference opening weekend, 45-38, to Saint Peter's. Sophomore Paulla Weekes registered a double-double in the loss, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

GAME SUMMARY

After a scoreless first minute of play, Juana Camilion opened up the scoring at the Hynes Center on a nice dish from Paulla Weekes. A Jenae Dublin jumper gave the Gaels a three-point lead as the game moved toward the mid-way portion of the first quarter. Taiah Thornton followed that with two straight baskets of her own to give the Peacocks an 8-6 advantage before the first media break of the evening.

Out of the timeout, Lucia Becerra Perez buried an uncontested three to end a three-plus minute scoring drought for the Maroon & Gold, giving them their third lead of the evening. Saint Peter's locked in defensively though, shutting Iona down for the final 2:48 of the quarter. Two baskets in the final minute for the visitors gave them a 12-9 lead after 10 minutes of action.

Iona regained the lead after a pair of free throws from Dublin and another triple from Becerra Perez. The Peacocks locked in defensively after allowing the first four points of the period, holding Iona scoreless for the next four-plus minutes. De'jah Williams ended the scoring drought, but not before Saint Peter's used a 9-0 run to take the lead right back. A three-pointer and a free throw from Weekes pulled Iona within one with 90 seconds to play in the half. Saint Peter's closed out the opening 20 minutes with a bucket and carried a 23-20 advantage into the break.

Saint Peter's opened up a five-point lead to begin the third quarter, but Weekes was able to get the Maroon & Gold back within a possession of the lead after back-to-back buckets. After a scoreless drought on both sides for a few minutes, Camilion scored to make it 28-27 in favor of the Gaels. Iona would take that lead into the final frame, and with momentum. Dublin finished inside with contact in the final seconds of the quarter, and although she missed the free throw, Iona led 30-29 heading into the final 10 minutes.

Similarily to the second quarter, Iona led early on but was done in by an extended scoring drought. A 10-2 run for the visitors turned Iona's one-point lead into a seven-point deficit with just over four minutes to play. Williams once again ended the Gaels' scoring drought and making it a five-point game. Saint Peter's advantage held steady over the final three-plus minutes and Iona never got any closer, eventually falling victim to the Peacocks for the second straight night.
