NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball team lost its 2020-21 home opener to Bryant, 62-46, on Friday evening.
Juana Camilion paved the way offensively again for Iona, scoring 13 points and dishing out four assists.
GAME SUMMARY
Both offenses started slow on Friday night, combining for just seven points total at the midway point of the first quarter. Following the first media break of the night, Dublin scored the first bucket of her collegiate career to give Iona a 5-4 lead. The lead changed hands twice more in the opening frame, but Iona would take an 11-8 advantage into the second quarter.
Â
Bryant used a 15-0 run across the first four minutes of the second frame, taking a 23-11 lead and forcing head coach
Billi Chambers to use her first timeout of the game. Dublin connected on the backend of two free throws to end Iona's scoreless drought, but not before another Bulldog run made it a 16-point game.
Â
Iona's defensive pressure picked up as the first half wound down, forcing turnovers and converting them into points. The Maroon & Gold trimmed their deficit to single digits once more after a
Shyan Mwai free throw, heading into halftime trailing 32-23.
Â
The Gaels began the second half with two straight baskets, making it a 32-27 game and eventually forcing a Bryant timeout. Out of the break, the Bulldogs pieced together eight straight points and opened up a 13-point lead with 4:30 to play in the period. That lead would only grow larger, as a Fatou Jallow buzzer-beater trey made it 49-33 in favor of the visitors at the end of three.
Â
Iona drew as close as 12 points of the lead, but never closer, as they fell 62-46 in the 2020-21 home opener.
