FAIRFIELD, CT – The Gaels earned another road win, outlasting the Stags 59-52 on their home court on Saturday afternoon. Iona improved to 5-1 away from home in league play and notched its first win at Alumni Hall since the 2015-16 season.
GAME SUMMARY
De'jah Williams opened up the scoring with a mid-range jumper just over a minute into play. The Gaels and the Stags proceeded to trade baskets back and forth for the next two minutes.Â
Â
Two straight buckets from Fairfield gave the Stags a 10-7 advantage, but
Monica Barefield's trifecta a minute later tied things up. Callie Cavanaugh was responsible for the final basket of the period, putting Fairfield up 12-10 after a full 10 minutes.
Â
Sam Kramer and
Juana Camilion traded triples to begin the second quarter, keeping Fairfield's three-point lead in tact. That lead would grow to six, but dwindled as the quarter went on.
Shyan Mwai grabbed an offensive rebound and laid it home to tie the game at 22 with just under four minutes remaining in the half.Â
Â
Mwai's trifecta on the following possession for Iona gave the Gaels a 25-22 lead. The advantage grew to five with under a minute left and settled at three points as the Maroon & Gold headed into the locker room.
Â
The Gaels scored the first two baskets of the second half, opening up a seven-point advantage in the score column, their largest lead of the game. Fairfield scored the next six points, trimming its deficit to 35-34. Kramer's two free throws at the 4:41 mark ended a two-minute dry spell for both sides and gave the Stags the lead again.
Â
Lucia Becerra Perez got to the rim and scored her first points of the game, taking the lead back for Iona. Barefield scored after the Iona press forced a turnover, extending the lead to 39-36, then another Stag turnover forced head coach Joe Frager to use a timeout. The Gaels got a stop and a bucket from Camilion out of the timeout, making it a five-point game.
Â
The two sides traded baskets over the opening 90 seconds of the final frame, the big basket being Becerra Perez's triple, which was her second trifecta of the season. Fairfield closed the gap after two Cavanaugh free throws made it 46-44 in favor of Iona. The Gaels cushioned their lead by scoring 10 of the next 13 points, opening up a double-digit lead with 4:35 to play.
Â
The Stags fought back, making it a two-possession game, but Iona hit on its free throws down the stretch, closing out a big road win for the Gaels.
