LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Iona College women's basketball team struggled in the second half of a 53-41 loss at Rider. The Gaels led by a point at the halftime break, but the Broncs outscored them 33-20 across the final two quarters. It marks just Iona's second loss on the road in league play.
GAME SUMMARY
The low-scoring affair got off to a very slow start at Alumni Gymnasium. Neither side scored for over two minutes to begin the afternoon.
Lucia Becerra Perez hit one-of-two free throws at the 7:40 mark, registering the game's first point. Nearly three minutes into the contest, Amanda Mobley connected on a jumper to give Rider a 2-1 lead. The Broncs led 4-3 at the first media timeout of the game.
Â
Iona found its groove offensively out of the timeout, ripping off eight straight points to take an 11-4 lead. Stella Johnson, the nation's leading scorer entering play today, picked up her second foul before her first basket. The first bucket came 42 seconds after her second foul, cutting Rider's deficit to five points. The Gaels led by as many as seven points with less than a minute remaining, but the Broncs scored five points in the final 26 seconds to make it a one-possession game at the end of one quarter.
Â
Lea Favre knotted the score at 13-13 in the first minute of the second quarter.
Monica Barefield connected on her first three-pointer of the game to give Iona the lead right back. Rider scored the next seven points to take a 20-16 lead, all the while holding Iona without a point for over four minutes.
Juana Camilion's jumper with 3:51 left in the first half put Iona down two and snapped the scoreless drought.
Â
Camilion then hit on a trifecta, tilting momentum back in the Gaels' favor and giving her side a 21-20 advantage. Neither side scored a point over the final 2:28 of action, so Iona took that lead into the locker room at the end of the second quarter.
Â
Rider stepped up its play on both sides of the ball in the second half, particularly Stella Johnson. The senior scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half. Favre and Mobley were also huge factors in the second half, chipping in eight points apiece.
Iona hung in there for the majority of the third quarter, getting back within one point of Rider with a
Paulla Weekes free throw 4:01 mark. The Broncs had an answer for everything though, stringing together a couple of buckets in a row at different times to pad its lead. The Gaels trailed by five entering the final frame.
Â
Rider scored the first nine points of the period, extending its lead to 46-32, the largest of the game. The Gaels had a goose egg in the score column for the opening four-plus minutes of the period. Tori Lekso's basket inside with 5:27 to play cut the disadvantage to 12 points.
Â
Rider's lead grew to as large as 19 points with three minutes left, eventually settling at 12 points when the clock expired. The Broncs completed the sweep of the season series against Iona, winning their 21
st game of the season.Â
