Iona Women's Lacrosse with a Dominating win over CCSU

Gaels erupt for 17 goals with nine different player finding the back of the net. Brisbin adds a team high five assists.

New Rochelle, NY - Iona women's lacrosse starts their five game home stand with a dominating win over Central Connecticut State University, 17-7. Two different Gaels recorded hat tricks but junior Caton Brisbin led the offense with seven points.

GAME SUMMARY

Sara Stewart and Katherine Meyers both scored three a piece while seven others also found the back of the net. Leah Marshall, Madi Kochanek, Emily Stewart and Brisbin had two goals each. Sophomores Megan Collins, Nora Carpenter, and Gabrielle Thornton also added a goal a piece. 

The Maroon & Gold assisted on 11 of the 17 goals with five assists coming from the junior Brisbin. The rest of the assists came from Collins and Carpertener each with two and Erin O'Donnell and Kochanek with one each. 

Junior Elyse Darcy picked up her second win of the season playing all but three minutes, she faced 22 shots making eight saves and allowed six goals. Samantha Tyo made one save and allowed a goal in her three minutes of action. As a team Iona caused six turnovers and picked up 21 ground balls. 

The Gaels jumped out to a quick four goal lead within the first eight minutes of play. The Blue Devils made it a three goal game with 14:52 left on the clock but the Maroon & Gold would score three unanswered goals from Stewart, Meyer and Carpenter to extend the lead to six. The Gaels and Blue Devils would trade goals from to end of the first half as Iona led by five. 

Brisbin would get her last two assists in the first four minutes of the second half on goals from Meyer and Thornton, this extended the lead to seven before CCSU found the back on the net to make it a six goal lead. The Gaels did not let up as they scored four more goals before the Devils answered with three minutes left to play. Meyer would be the last to score and record her first hat trick of the season with 2:25 left to play. 

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Iona out shot CCSU 32-23 and Out scored them 7-2 in the second half
  • The Gaels scored 17 goals on 32 shots, shooting just over 50 percent
  • Both teams were even on ground balls at 21 a piece
  • First win by 10 goals or more since the 2016 season 
  • Iona is now 6-3 all time vs CCSU and has won the last three

UP NEXT

The Gaels are back in action on Saturday February 29 against Lafayette, the game is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM on Mazzella Field.
