QUEENS, NY – The Iona College baseball program fell to St. John's at Jack Kaiser Field on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 9-3.
Sam Punzi had two hits and two runs batted in.
Jake Liberatore walked three times and scored a run.
GAME RECAP
St. John's' pitching didn't allow for much in terms of wiggle room as it allowed just five hits and struck out 16 Gael batters. Brian Hendry started the game for the Red Storm and went four innings allowing one hit, two walks and two earned runs.
The Gaels scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning.
Luca Lotito was hit by a pitch and
Jake Liberatore walked to lead off the inning. Each advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Lotito scored on and RBI groundout off the bat of
Jake Field, and
Sam Punzi singled to centerfield to bring Liberatore home.
Iona's third run came in the eighth inning.
Vicente Mendoza singled through the left and was advanced to second when
Ryan Casey was hit by a pitch. Mendoza scored on a fielder's choice followed by a Red Storm throwing error.
Ryan Martin began the game for the Gaels and went three innings surrendering five earned runs on six hits and two walks.
Zach Grace, Brandon Smith,
Drew Helmstetter and
James Sharkey also appeared on the rubber for the Maroon & Gold.
St. John's outhit Iona, 11-5. All but one of its hits were singles. The Gaels didn't commit a fielder error while the Red Storm had a pair.
