POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Time ran out on a furious comeback attempt for the Iona College women's basketball team at the McCann Center on Thursday night. Marist held on despite the late charge by the Gaels, who fall to 8-11 in league play after the 59-47 loss.
GAME SUMMARY
Sloppy to start, Marist turned the ball over four times in the first four minutes, but defensively held Iona to just one basket, a
Juana Camilion three, during that span. 13 combined points, eight combined turnovers across the opening seven minutes of action. Iona trailed by five points, despite going into the first media timeout of the evening hitting just one of its previous seven field goal attempts.Â
Â
The Maroon & Gold did not score on their next five possessions out of the break to end the quarter, but held the Red Foxes without a field goal as well. The only points across the final 2:16 of the opening period were two free throws from Alana Gilmer with two seconds remaining.
Â
Marist exploded for 21 second-quarter points, building a 20-point lead at halftime. The Red Foxes ended the half on a 19-4 run, holding Iona to just two baskets over the final seven minutes.
Â
The Gaels scored four points over the first four minutes of the second half, all courtesy of
De'jah Williams. The Red Foxes outscored Iona 8-4 through the first half of the third quarter, extending their lead to 24 points, the largest advantage of the evening.
Â
Iona played much better in the waning portion of the third quarter, scoring nine points compared to just five for Marist. However, the Red Foxes still owned a 20-point edge heading into the final frame.
Â
The Maroon & Gold held Marist without a point for nearly four minutes to begin the fourth quarter, forcing five Red Foxes' turnovers during that span. A
Morgan Rachu three-pointer with 6:30 left made it a 10-point deficit for the Gaels. Gilmer put in a layup to end a 10-0 Iona run, but the Gaels scored the next eight points to make it a four-point game.
Â
Sarah Barcello would make it a six-point affair after scoring on a second-chance opportunity down low. Iona never got any closer in the final four minutes of action, as Marist salted away the game at the free throw line.
Â
The Red Foxes lead grew to double-figures once more and Iona could do no more over the final 90 seconds of the game. Another Rachu trifecta would make it a nine-point game in the final minute, but it would be the final basket for Iona on the night, as Marist won 59-47.
