Iona Loses to Stony Brook in First Game of Demarini Tiger Clash

Freshman Allie Taylor had the Gaels’ lone hit of the afternoon and was one of just five hitters to reach base in the game.

TOWSON, MD – The Iona College softball team could not produce any offense in a 6-0 loss to Stony Brook University in the first game of the Demarini Tiger Clash. Freshman Allie Taylor had the Gaels' lone hit of the afternoon and was one of just five hitters to reach base in the game.

GAME SUMMARY

Stony Brook sent Dawn Bodrug to the circle for the first game of the tournament; she struck out the side, working around a two-out walk to Jasmine Temple.

Zazzaro got the nod for the Gaels, and she ran into some trouble in the bottom of the first. A leadoff walk and a stolen base put a runner in scoring position with less than two outs. Zazzaro got the second out, but two more free passes loaded the bases. Lindsey Osmer brought home the game's first run with an infield single, but it would be all the Seawolves got in the first.

Stony Brook struck for another run in the second after a Jouridin Hering triple pushed across the second run of the afternoon. Zazzaro punched out the next batter before getting a fly ball to limit the damage and end the inning.

After a scoreless third inning, Bodrug headed back to the circle in the fourth looking to strike out the side for a third straight inning. She did get a ninth straight punchout, dating back to the opening frame, but Ciarra DiGuilio grounded out to third to end the strikeout streak for Bodrug. Still, Iona was hitless and scoreless through four full innings.

Stony Brook tacked on another run, this one unearned against Zazzaro, on a sacrifice fly. Corrine Badger reached on an error in the infield, eventually moving all the way to third, where she scored after a fly ball of the bat of Hering.

The Seawolves got one more run in the fifth and two more in the sixth, pushing their lead to 6-0. Bodrug continued to deal, allowing just one hit, an infield single by Taylor in the top of the sixth. The Gaels could not procure anything offensively, taking a 6-0 loss in the opening game of the Demarini Tiger Clash.
