TOWSON, MD – The Iona College softball team lost a pair of games on Saturday at the 2020 Demarini Tigers Clash. Iona fell versus Stony Brook by a score of 7-1 in the opener and then 3-0 against the host, Towson. The Gaels' lone run across 14 innings of play came on a
Kayla Hujber infield single.
GAME TWO: TOWSON 3, IONA 0
The Gaels and Tigers were scoreless through the first four-and-a-half innings at the Tiger Softball Complex before Towson pushed two across in the bottom of the fifth.
Â
Iona had two baserunners in the opening five frames,
Ciarra DiGuilio (single) and
Natalia Meray (reached on error). Neither runner advanced past second base.
Â
The bottom of the fifth frame began with back-to-back singles, the latter of which was a bunt single. Senior
Marnie Skinner got the first out of the inning with a ground ball, but both runners moved up 60 feet. Sara Johnson singled home both runners to get Towson on the board first. Skinner got a strikeout and a groundball to finagle her way out of the inning.
Â
The Maroon & Gold put the tying runs on base in the next half inning after a
Jessica Chilcott single followed by a
Kaelene Walter double. Johnson, who entered in relief to begin the inning, punched out
Jasmine Temple and DiGuilio swinging to neutralize the threat.
Â
Lauren Ringhiser pushed Towson's third run across with a single to the first baseman, charged as an unearned run against Skinner after an error earlier in the frame.
Â
Meray singled to lead off the top of the seventh inning, but was almost immediately erased off the base paths after Skinner bounced into a double play.
Allie Taylor reached on an error to keep hope alive for the moment, but Iona's day was done after
Rebecca Gabert grounded out to the right side.
GAME ONE: STONY BROOK 7, IONA 1
Play-by-play statistics were not made available for Iona's first game of the afternoon.
Â
In summary,
Alana Evans tossed a complete game, allowing all seven runs (six earned), on 13 hits with a season-best 10 strikeouts.
Â
Hujber beat out an infield single to score pinch-runner
Maggie Foley, Iona's only run of the day.
Â
Brown, Chilcott, DiGuilio and Walter were responsible for the Gaels' four other hits. The Seawolves scored four of their seven runs in the top of the seventh inning.
