NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has announced the final Commissioner's Cup standings for the 2019-20 athletic year. Iona College's men's program placed first in the commissioner's cup men's standings, and the Maroon & Gold placed second in the overall standings. The women's teams scored the sixth most points.
"We are incredibly proud of not just the success of our men's programs, but also all of our programs for their efforts and perseverance this season," said Iona College Director of Athletics
Matthew Glovaski. "The cancellation of spring sports due to the pandemic was unprecedented, and everyone at Iona is proud of the way our student-athletes have united over the past few months. Together we have all been able to 'Fight The Good Fight' and make Gael Nation stronger for it."
Rider won the overall standings with 72.00 points, just eking out the Maroon & Gold by 0.50 points. The Gaels had 33.50 points on the men's side, beating out runner-up Saint Peter's by 2.50 points. Iona's women's programs scored 38.00 points.
It is the first time the Maroon & Gold won the men's standings of the commissioner's cup since 2010-11. Iona's second place overall finish is the school's best since that same 2010-11 season when the Gaels & Marist Red Foxes shared first place.
With the cancelation of spring sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were special amendments made to the 2019-20 MAAC Commissioners' Cup standings. For the men's side, the best scores are taken from two championships plus the men's basketball regular season. On the women's side, the best scores in four championships are included along with basketball regular season.
