GAME SUMMARY
The first set was the most decisive for Iona, winning 25-16. The Gaels came out firing, hitting a match-high .310 percent to go along with 12 kills from five different players. Iona closed out the set on a 11-2 run, which started when the set was knotted up at 14. Kills from junior
Fleur Wiersma, sophomore
Jen Soto and sophomore
Emma Jacobs propelled Iona during the stretch. The Gaels closed out the set on Canisius' ninth attack error to strike first in the match.
Set two Iona carried the momentum, continuing to control play, only trailing once and posting 15 kills with 11 of them being assisted by Juran. After an ace from Valasakos, Iona had set points leading 24-19 but Canisius rallied together three straight points on two kills to cut the lead to 24-22. On the next point, Wiersma closed the door on the set, with a massive kill giving Iona the second frame, 25-22.
In the third set both teams traded runs but slowly the tides started to change as Canisius' comeback began. The Golden Griffins took control early in the set leading 10-6, taking advantage of four attack errors from the Gaels. However, Iona battled right back; trailing 11-7 the Gaels won the next five points with two kills each from Valasakos and Jacobs. Canisius struck back with a 6-1 run giving the Golden Griffs a 17-13 lead and command of the set. Up 24-22, Canisius held off Iona and closed out the set on Hannah Nelson's ace.
The fourth set was a nail biter, as the frame saw 11 ties and seven lead changes. Tied at five apiece, Canisius went on an 8-2 run, taking advantage again of five errors from the Gaels during this stretch. Down 13-7 the Maroon & Gold turned it around, going on a 10-3 run, taking a late 17-16 lead in the set. The run was sparked from Iona's bench as senior
Alessandra Brady, and sophomores
Tamara Pichardo and
Kiarra Roth, playing in her first match since September 4th, all contributed. After a Wiersma kill, Iona was within two points of winning the match, leading 23-22, unfortunately three straight critical attack errors doomed the Gaels as Canisius capitalized and took the fourth set to force a deciding set.
In the fifth set set Canisius stood tall, outlasting the Gaels. Up 14-13 Canisius closed the match on Ella Loussias's team-high 12th and final kill giving Canisius the set 15-13, and the victory.
Iona set a new season-high with 65 kills as they had four different players in double figures. Wiersma, Jacobs and Soto each poured in 12 kills and sophomore
Hope Matschner had a game-high 25 digs as the Gaels fell to 1-4 in MAAC play.
