LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team battled, but fell to the reigning MAAC Champions, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon. Siena held off a late surge by Iona, dropping the Maroon & Gold to 1-3 in conference play.
The Gaels conceded an early goal on Saturday, putting the team in an early hole. A volley into the box led to three chances, the final one found twine. Iona's backline stopped the first two tries by Siena attackers, but the third one came off the foot of Rebecca Rolland and gave the Saints a 1-0 lead just 8:55 into the match. Kiera Haggerty saw a shot ring off the crossbar just over a minute earlier, adding some insult to injury for the Gaels.
Siena added early insurance in the first half when Annie Bagnall headed home a corner from Lexi Bartlow in the 30th minute. The 2-0 lead for Siena would hold heading into the halftime break, but Iona would not roll over.
The Maroon & Gold answered almost immediately in the second half when Samantha Hogan fired a right-footed rocket up and over the 2020-21 MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year to make it 2-1 in favor of the Saints. Siena notched a late goal in the 82nd minute that seemingly sunk Iona, but Haggerty responded with one of her own in the 88th minute that made things ~interesting~
Trailing again by just one goal with minimal time to work with, the Gaels turned up the pressure offensively, but could not find the equalizer. A late try from Kedarjah Lewis sailed high of the cage and allowed Siena to run the clock to zeroes and emerge with a victory over Iona.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Hogan's goal, the first of two for Iona, was her first of the season and the third of her career. The score was the first for since her freshman season, the last of which came on October 26, 2019 against Canisius.
