Iona WSOC Comes Up Empty At Home Versus Marist

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team lost 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon to Marist at Mazzella Field. Abby Murphy's 63rd minute goal accounted for all the scoring and was enough to hold off the Maroon & Gold.

Emma Havrilla made two first-half saves for Iona, the first of which came during the opening minutes against Bridget Dudziec. Extra pressure after the save led to a corner for Marist, the first opportunity for either side, in the fourth minute. Marist could not procure anything offensively off of the chance from the corner.

Kiera Haggerty was responsible for Iona's best chance in the opening 45 minutes, a shot that sailed high and wide of the top-right corner of the cage. Madison Lennon had the other chance, a long-range shot that never made it to net after a Marist defender got a body in front of it.

The match was even at 0-0 as the two sides headed into the second half. Marist upped the intensity offensively early on in the second stanza, firing shots at will towards Havrilla. Three different Red Foxes missed shots in a seven-minute span, followed up by Murphy's goal that broke the scoreless tie.

The pressure finally broke the proverbial pipe after Dudziec crossed a ball into the box that Murphy headed to the right of Havrilla as she jumped left, never giving the Iona keeper much of a chance.

Marist packed it in defensively after taking the lead, conceding six shot attempts to the Gaels and posting none of their own. All six Iona shots came off the feet of Haggerty. One of Iona's best chances was after Natalie Kelchner committed an offense inside the box, allowing the Gaels an indirect free kick. Haggerty's left-footed shot after the touch from Sofia Banegas missed way high.

Later on down the stretch, Haggerty settled a ball on the near side of the pitch, turning loose a shot bending towards the far post that Kelchner outstretched to smother. Kelchner did well to shut down Haggerty and Iona's final try in the 85th minute, securing the shutout victory over the Maroon & Gold.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Haggerty's seven shots were a match and a career-high for the junior.
  • Iona has now been shutout offensively in two consecutive home matches, conceding a goal in each of the two losses.
  • Each keeper made just two saves in the match. Havrilla's came in the first half, while Kelchner made both of her stops in the second.
  • Lennon was responsible for Iona's other shot this afternoon. Marist had eight different players record a shot.

UP NEXT

Iona returns to action this Sunday, October 10 at home against Wagner. The Gaels and the Seahawks wrap up non-conference play officially at Mazzella Field at 2:00 p.m.
