Iona WSOC Beats Quinnipiac in Hamden

HAMDEN, CT - The Iona College women's soccer team took down Quinnipiac, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the QU Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium. The Gaels' fourth consecutive win was fueled by goals from Kedarjah Lewis and Kayla Thomas, who put home the decisive goal in the 67th minute with Iona down to 10 players.

It was less than ideal start for the Maroon & Gold on Wednesday in Hamden, the collegiate home of head coach Todd Plourde. Rebecca Cooke was fouled inside the box and the head referee awarded the Bobcats with a penalty kick. Selena Salas took care of business, firing one left of Emma Havrilla, who dove to the opposite post. The goal came just over three minutes into the match.

Havrilla made a stop on Quinnipiac's try to go up two goals just over 90 seconds later, her first save of the day. The Bobcats' Sofia Lospinoso was not forced to make her first save until the 21st minute, doing so on a shot by Andrea Ferrer. The only other shot on target in the final 20-plus minutes of the opening 45 minutes came from Sofia Banegas, which was saved. The 1-0 Quinnipiac lead carried over into the second half, which is when Iona did its damage.

Lewis opened up the scoring for the Gaels with a right-footed rocket into the upper 90 of the net off a pass from Faith Preziosi. The rookie launched one from an awkward angle on the far side of the 18-yard box, catching Lospinoso by surprise, though it would have been a difficult save either way. Senior Mackenzie Meixner had the secondary assist on the goal.

It seemed that momentum would shift in favor of Quinnipiac after Kelsie Kearns was excused from the pitch after being issued her second yellow card in the 62nd minute, leaving the Gaels with just 10 players for the final 28-plus minutes of action. Anyone who figured that would be the case would have been surprised that the Gaels would actually grab all the momentum when Kiera Haggerty crossed a pass into the box, which Thomas cleaned up to give Iona a 2-1 lead with just over 23 minutes remaining. The initial pass from the set-piece corner came off the head of Ferrer and got behind Lospinoso, where Thomas was able to push it home.

Down a player and clinging onto the one-goal lead in enemy territory, Iona's defense sealed the deal in Hamden. Havrilla faced six shots and made four saves in the final portion of the match after Iona's go-ahead goal.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Lewis' equalizer was her team-leading fifth of the season. The rookie has now scored in back-to-back contests for the first time this year.
  • Thomas scored the game-winner, the first collegiate goal of the Watertown, Connecticut natives career. She now has three points this season, having tallied an assist earlier this year at VMI.
  • Havrilla earned her seventh win overall and third consecutive in net, facing a season-high 20 shots and making a season-best seven saves.
  • Haggerty, Meixner and Preziosi were all credited with assists. Haggerty now has 11 points (three goals, five assists), second-most on the unit. She trails Preziosi, who added her sixth helper of the season and leads the squad in assists and points (14).
  • Preziosi, in her third athletic season with the program, now has 44 career points (17 goals, 10 assists). Her point total is second-most in program history and her six assists this season are a career-best mark.
  • Iona catapulted into sole possession of seventh place in the league with the victory. The Gaels had entered play in ninth place. One point separates the Maroon & Gold from a tie for fifth and they own a two-point cushion on eighth place Rider.
  • Iona has now defeated Quinnipiac in back-to-back matches. The win today for the Gaels is the first in program history on the road against the Bobcats. Previously, the Maroon & Gold were 0-3-1 in Hamden, dating back to 2007.
