Iona MSOC Loses on the Road at Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Iona College men's soccer team lost 1-0 to Rider on Wednesday evening at Ben Cohen Field. An early second-half goal for the Broncs accounted for the lone goal of the match.

Iona withstood an early onslaught from Rider offensively, seeing three shots miss wide in the opening 15 minutes. The Gaels first chance came from Tim Timchenko, which also missed wide of the net. Juan Alfaro Monge drew another start in net for the Maroon & Gold, making his first save of the evening on a Regis Dulck shot in the 33rd minute.

Iona had a pair of chances in the second half of the opening 45 minutes of action waved off for offsides, then had a set-piece from the corner with six minutes to play cleared without a shot towards goal. The Gaels collectively sighed in relief after a Zaki Alibou try with just about five minutes remaining in the first half hit the post. The period would close with no score from either team.

Camil Azzam Ruiz, Iona's leading goal and point scorer, registered his first shots of the match in the early portion of the second half. His first attempt missed right, then another shot a little over a minute later was saved by Pablo Gatinois, his first stop of the night. Those tries led to a pair of corners, which led to a missed shot by Inigo Zaballa Gonzalez and a goal kick for Rider.

A turnover on the defensive side of midfield led to Rider's goal. Alibou picked up the assist when he crossed into the middle for Francisco Gomez Olano, who buried the shot past Alfaro Monge. Iona struggled to create chances in the 20 minutes following the icebreaker from Gomez Olano, registering just one shot during that time frame.

The Gaels' offense picked up the pace in the final 15 minutes, seeing chances from Azzam Ruiz, Eduardo Calvo-Salinas and Ricardo Senen Pinillos all miss the mark. Gatinois made a wonderful stop on a direct shot from a free kick by Azzam Ruiz, keeping Iona off the board. Iona's final push was thwarted after they were whistled offside, ending the match at Ben Cohen Field.

NOTABLE NUGGETS
